Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in my garden, home, and travel! Enjoy.

Easy Wildflower Garden

Easy Wildflower Garden

If you are looking for an easy, super low-maintenance garden with a BIG impact, I have just the idea for you!

After pulling out some sad looking azaleas to make room for the vegetable garden, we were stuck with an unsightly patch of dirt on the far side of our new split-rail vegetable garden fence. I felt terribly because the patch of dirt was right on our property line. Our next-door neighbor has very nice gardens, so I wanted to make sure we planted something beautiful but low-maintenance because it’s a bit tricky to access this bed because of its location.

Finally, after months of looking at dirt, Alex had the great idea to plant a wildflower bed. It was the perfect idea! Low maintenance, beautiful, long-lasting blooms, and great for the local wildlife.

Although we usually only plant perennials, Alex was quite busy this year so we didn’t have a chance to go to a local nursery and purchase perennial wildflowers before it got too late into the season. Desperate to plant SOMETHING, I purchased the Northeast Pollinator Wildflower Seed Mix from American Meadows. I ordered the 1/2 pound bag for $26.95. I think it might be the best $26.95 I’ve ever spent!

The seed bag is so cute! A+ for packaging!

My wildflower seeds arrived on July 10th and I sowed them right away. I did very little to prepare the bed for planting. We had tilled the soil three months earlier when we first made the bed so I considered that good enough. I simply raked the dirt out and then scattered the seeds! I have to say, it was SO NICE to not have to dig any holes!

I watered my seeds right away and daily (sometimes 2x a day) for the next 2 weeks, until the seeds had germinated. Because it was mid-July, and temperatures were consistently in the 90s, it was crucial to water often. After the first few weeks of watering, I didn’t do anything at all; no weeding, no pruning, no plant health care needed. My early watering efforts paid off and a month-and-a-half later I had a lush wildflower garden that I couldn’t be more delighted with!

I love the wildflowers against the split-rail garden fence.

I can’t decide if the wildflowers look more stunning in the ground or in a vase. This was the most simple but beautiful arrangement I think I have ever made. I am surprised by how much I love the pop of yellow and orange in our living room.

I was very happy with the American Meadows wildflower seed mix this year. I think next year we will plant a few perennials and then also scatter in some wildflower seeds again to fill up the bed. It is such a low-cost, low-maintenance and easy way to create a high-impact space!
