Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in my garden, home, and travel! Enjoy.

Guest Bathroom Renovation

Guest Bathroom Renovation

When we added an en-suite master bathroom to our house, we simultaneously renovated the existing upstairs full bathroom. The hall bath serviced all three bedrooms and was so tiny that Alex and I could hardly fit in there together at the same time. The existing tub was original to the house and 80+ years old. It wasn’t a full size tub, so if you were to take a bath, you would have to sit and hug your knees to your chest. The drop ceiling over the tub and acrylic shower surround were also outdated and in desperate need of updating. By taking some space from the guest bedroom closets and reconfiguring the layout, we were able to make the space seem much larger, and more importantly, much more functional.

I can’t believe how much more open the space feels by tucking the tub into the wall on the left and having a narrow vanity and the toilet on the right. You might notice we used the same floor tile, paint color, and countertop material as in the master bathroom. All of the selections were bright, fresh and neutral, which will appeal to appeal to future homeowners. (The biscuit subway tile is from Home Depot and the Carrera White Marble 3” Hexagon floor tile is from Stone Center Online.)

This vanity had to be custom made because at only 15.5” deep, it was narrower than any standard vanity I could find online. By pairing this Kohler Wall-Mounted Faucet with the narrowest sink I could find online, I managed to maximize usable countertop space and would up with a vanity arrangement that feels plenty big enough for daily use. The Pottery Barn cabinet knobs match the faucet in a chrome finish.

The Ballard Atoll mirror reflects our beautiful scalloped shower curtain, which is also from Ballard but is unfortunately no longer available. The piped edge hand towel and tissue holder are Weezie.

Opposite the sink and toilet, we tucked an American Standard tub into an alcove that was previously the guest bedroom closet. The shower hardware is the Kohler Bancroft shower and tub system.

The simultaneous projects of adding a master bathroom and renovating the existing hall bath was a huge undertaking. With an original timeline of six weeks, the project took much longer at almost six months due to several delays, particularly with the custom vanities. Alex and I are really happy with our new bathrooms and look forward to seeing how the investment will pay off down the road with future buyers.
