Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in my garden, home, and travel! Enjoy.

Bedroom Renovation - Phase I

Bedroom Renovation - Phase I

Originally, our master bedroom was divided directly down the middle with a wall and small pass through, essentially creating two separate rooms: one for the bed and one for dressing. Although we are fairly sure the dividing wall was not original to the space, we aren’t sure when exactly it was put in. Presumably, whoever added it wanted to create a built-in closet. However, the center wall reduced the amount of usable space and dramatically reduced the natural light. As a result, both rooms felt small and poorly lit.

Here are photos from the online listing in 2015. You can click on the photos to enlarge them.

As you can see, a king sized bed only just fits in the bedroom and leaves no space for nightstands. Additionally, the “dressing room” had a lack of usable space with the entire center of the room completely empty.

We decided to take out the center wall and closet in order to revert the room back to its original structure. Here are some “during” photos. As it turns out, an old leak through the chimney flange led to a minor mold issue in the ceiling of the closet. Luckily, our carpenter fixed this quite easily as the mold hadn’t damaged too much of the supporting wood.

The photo on the left is just before our carpenter began. If you remember, all of the carpet was torn out and the floors were refinished before Alex moved into the house. In the photo on the right, you can already tell how much more natural light is able to fill the room without the wall.

The entire process of removing the wall, adding in additional support beams in the ceiling, and fixing the mold in the ceiling took about 2 weeks total and cost us approximately $6,000 (including $800 for fresh paint).

Voila! What do you think? The room feels so large to us! We actually spent the first few days laughing every time we walked into the room because we can’t believe how big it is!

Ultimately, we plan to add an on-suite bathroom and closet to the far wall where the Christmas Tree and mirror currently stand. Although we have three bedrooms upstairs, they all share one teeny, tiny bathroom. An on-suite bathroom would truly make this space the perfect master retreat. We need to save up before beginning Phase 2!
